Our Learn Scripture By Heart Blog is changing. Change is sometimes thrilling, sometimes daunting, but it is always inevitable, a fact of life. In this post I explain what led us to transition to video and what you can expect from our Blog as we move forward.
God speaks to us through His Word in ways we are not always immediately aware of. The verses in this post helped point out a root issue in my life, an attitude that was harmful to my spiritual health. Resolving this was a game-changer, because we can never be too prepared for difficult days.
I hide God’s Word in my heart for many reasons, because I have many needs. I need to remind myself of God’s promises, to avoid temptation and sin, to prepare myself for spiritual warfare against a determined foe, to encourage myself about God’s sovereignty, about His character, about eternity, and often just to hang out with Him.
One of the most important lessons I have learned from Scripture that I often pray without realizing I’m doing it. These unintentional prayers can have unintended consequences. It’s one of the reasons I am so focused on memorizing the Word. I need all the help, all the reminders I can get!
Having trouble memorizing a verse? Let’s be honest. Memorization takes effort, and some verses are easier to learn than others. Some of the most rewarding verses can also be the most challenging to learn. When the going gets tough, it can test our resolve to learn. Here’s a solution for those hard-to-learn verses.
Are your attempts to memorize a certain verse frustrating you? If you’re like me, you don’t really mind putting in the effort, IF you are making measurable progress. If not, here’s how to refine your approach.
What if there was a hidden, God-given quality built-in to your mind that could dramatically improve your Scripture memorization? (Hint: There is.) What if there was a way to harness this quality, turning your mind into a memorization workhorse? (You can.) It’s a subtle change in approach that will bring dramatic, noticeable improvement, I promise!
Here’s a memorization secret about cooperating with one’s own mind, a lesson I learned from my time recording TV/film music with studio musicians in Hollywood. Standing in front of the finest musicians in the world, I only needed to flow with them, to encourage them, to guide them and stay out of their way.
Any long term discipline requires finding and keeping the enjoyment in doing it. Otherwise, it could eventually become drudgery, even though it is a drudgery of our own making. I realize I’ve just stated the obvious. The real question is how.
Starting is beautiful, intoxicating even. But beginnings can also be daunting, humble and messy. Maybe this is why it takes so much courage to take that very first step. Congratulations!
